Artist Statement for Jim Tzelepis

Digital Images

Although I’ve enjoyed the pleasures of drawing off and on for most of my life, I am basically a self-taught late bloomer. I began saving various of my drawings that I liked and then became interested in the idea of digitally coloring and enhancing them. The results were encouraging, and as I developed more art, and more as an artist, I appreciated the beauty and interplay of color, shape and movement in these works that combine to create exotic, intriguing effects.

I love emphasizing those elements, creating textures beneath the surface that impart a visually and mentally stimulating experience, one that hopefully lets the eye and mind roam the image and be captivated.

I believe these images bridge the gap between digital and traditionally painted artwork. The underlying original drawing, often visible through layered colors, imparts a natural artistic feeling, while digital effects enhance pattern, form and flow.

All pieces are available for sale as limited edition giclee prints. Prints may be custom ordered to your size requirements - framed or unframed.Prices for any size signed giclee prints with certificate of authenticity available upon inquiry. Also, studio-quality 8.5 x 11 certified prints - signed and numbered, on HP premium plus matte photo paper (75lb, 280g/m2) for $30.00.

Frescoes

In 2006 I was fortunate enough to be able to visit Greece for a month. Besides visiting relatives, I visited the wondrous museums and archeological sites where great art is everywhere. In Santorini and in Crete, I was inspired by the beautiful frescoes from the Minoan and Classical periods. In the museums, the numerous vase paintings with their simplistic and elegant images were unforgettable. By the time we returned home, I was already decided on the idea of creating not only frescoes, but also replicating vase painting images in fresco style, by which I could present them in a larger scale and a unique format. These are my latest works, completed in the three months before the showing. I plan to continue producing such works for the foreseeable future, as I think they’re enthralling. I hope they might inspire young people of all ages to at least an increased curiosity about the history, people and myths of ancient Mediterranea.

Thank you for viewing, and please sign my guestbook.
