Artist Statement:
My art work reveals a fascination for fabrics of Asian and Western origin. Theme and fabric are frequently combined, often at first glance, in a unique yet bizarre way. A second glance reveals that everything is researched, well-planned, and deliberate.
Our daily life--the 'dailies' as one might say as in the German term 'Alltäglichkeiten'--is my primary source of work. The method of looking at 'dailies' is through the focus, collection, enlargement, and repitition of particular subject matter, without disregard for my own position in a foreign culture. The question arises...are we not all foreigners in this global world, constantly trying to integrate into something new? The 'dailies' are mere symbols of the world that dominates our existence. To be candid, we are almost addicted to them to some extent because their very existence seems to be so natural and comfortable.
There is careful fabric selection and the integration of certain themes, such as weather forecasts for the island of Singapore and South East Asia, the dream houses of urban citizens in general and the lives of foreign workers at constructions sites – to name but a few in my series of artworks – and this harbours a ...
