Artist Statement for Vanessa Chakour

My abstract art is the process of emptying and meditating. The art itself is the process of self-transformation. Akin to shedding skin, letting go of the surface layers that get in to way of seeing. It's a process of renewal. Moving forward and leaving the old skins, the old self behind. Visual art and writing have long been my means of release, letting go and gaining perspective. Four years ago, I was reading my journal and realized that my best writing was there, hidden away. Raw, real and unedited. Words, ideas and images that had to 'get out' written in every direction, squashed onto the pages, creating shades and shadows. So that's when I saw it. I decided to get a large masonite board and write, unedited. I began writing small, stream-of consciousness to see what came of it. I woke up and wrote, and wrote, and wrote... continuously in different colors. Small, so it remained unedited. From there I continued with similar pieces; words of both self-exploration and excavation. As the style evolved, I began portraits with the words of others. Words that have inspired me, shaped me or that convey a particular message. It's a continuous process: The willingness to let go and turn inside out. Letting my mind roam free and exposing it for others to see, whether they choose to look only at the image or read the words. This style has now transformed and I combine the same thing with images. What may have been my meditative doodles are now powerful pieces. They come from the most genuine place on both on the surface and from within. The blank page fills with both my creativity and contamination so that I may become empty and free.
