Artist Statement:
I like to think of my
watercolor paintings as "an
investment in visual
pleasure", and have been told
by viewers that they never
tire of looking at many of my
chosen subjects. They are
intrigued by the sense of
depth, natural roundness of
form and shape, as well as the
vibrant transparent colors,
which are usually combined
with a neutral. The nature of
watercolor is perfect for me
because it lends itself to
spontaneous surfaces and
details into which I can add
texture.
Over the years, after playing
with the brilliance of color
in flowers, I've tried to
reduce the components of other
images to reflect a sharpened
focus, making the piece very
simple yet powerful at the
same time. I want to capture
candid moments of Zoo animal
life, contained but not
captive, and the way they add
to the richness and beauty of
something outside of
ourselves. Children and Pets
catch my eye for the very same
reason, with spontaneous
moments that convey their
personality in the simplest of
terms.
My paintings can be viewed up
close or enjoyed from a
distance; for me this is a
mandatory aspect of art.
