Artist Statement for Vera Dennen
|

|
I like to think of my watercolor paintings as "an investment in visual pleasure", and have been told by viewers that they never tire of looking at my chosen subjects. They are intrigued by the sense of depth, natural roundness of form and shape, as well as the vibrant transparent colors, which are usually combined with a neutral. The nature of watercolor is perfect. It lends itself to spontaneous surfaces and details into which I can add texture.
While making the piece very simple, yet powerful at the same time, I want to capture candid moments of Zoo animal life, contained but not captive, and the way they add to the richness and beauty of something outside of ourselves. Children and Pets catch my eye for the very same reason, with spontaneous moments that convey their personality in the simplest of terms. Keeping the spark alife, I paint in oil and mixed media as well, as I find the need for a new challenge helps keep my work fresh.
