Using mediums such as acrylic, pencil and water colour, I paint reflections of what I imagine exists, usually through the lens of women and animals experiencing reprieve from place. I rarely locate my subjects as I prefer to explore their emotional states as well as their interaction with activities. For example, I am currently working on a series of 8X10 canvases featuring fruits and vegetables being cooked by women: Lemon Girl, Tomato Girl, Cabbage Girl, etc. I focus on the relationship between the colours of the food and the emotional state of the cook. Each girl has a special relationship with what she is cooking (which is shown by her style of dress), so the viewer is lead from one small painting to the next in the process of assembling an interpretation of the visual “meal” or “dinner party.” Consequently, I indirectly ask my audience to look into my imagination to see the potential the relationship between my characters and their cooking. This reflects one of my voices as an artist: art is about letting one’s imagination loose on the world, and in the case of my current project – the kitchen.
