Artist Statement:
Virgil Lee Shelton JR (1976-
Present) was born and raised
in Las Cruces New Mexico. Las
Cruces is a small city of
150,000 located 45 miles away
from the border of Mexico (45
miles away from El Paso
Texas). I grew up playing
soccer, creating art, playing
in the school band (tuba and
Bass Guitar), football and
track. I also coached soccer
after high school for Mayfield
High School (Go Trojans!) and
moved to Seattle in 1996 on a
mission to create a life as an
artist..
I've been drawing ever since I
could hold a crayon, and by
the time I was about seven or
eight, I could replicate
anything I saw (comic books in
particular) on paper. People
who saw my work were amazed
that I didn't trace the
pictures.. When I look at an
object I can translate it on
paper with very exact
precision. One of the most
pleasurable things I do as an
artist is replicate real life
on paper. I love drawing
things as realistically as
possible, and it's very
challenging and rewarding when
I get it right.
