Artist Statement:
I have recently settled in Christchurch, New Zealand, after living, traveling, studying and exhibiting in Asia for more than a decade. My works, while away, developed a resemblance to maps conveying the route to be taken – travelling and eventually, home to New Zealand.
Australia, Singapore, and New Zealand presented disparities between city and country, large and small, and in relative sizes and distances. These factors relate in my mind to mapping. I found my work developed lines large and small throughout each piece. When I analized the pieces it seemed to me to be development of the "route home". My work expresses the feeling of being always on the move and never in one place for long. There is also the notion of never quite knowing where I will be at any one time in the future. A map is a two dimensional representation of the three dimensional earth, plus the fourth dimension of time. My artwork,is a simulacrum of this ideal. They are built up with translucent layers conveying a peaceful plateau broken only by mysterious landforms. I have been involved in arts all my life in one way or another. Being born to parents both of whom had an interest in the visual arts.
Moving to Singapore allowed me the time dollars and space to formalise this interest. |

| Your Personal Biography |
Born in Dunedin, New Zealand
Educated at Otago Girls' High School, Dunedin.
Office worker, Marriage and three children later I took up spinning wool, weaving and dying the wool which I made into useable objects and also wall hangings.
I have been involved in the arts attending evening painting classes off and on during my years when family was a priority in my life.
When my husband took up a position teaching in Singapore where we stayed for almost twelve years, I worked in various offices as a Personal Assistant but in the end decided to use my time in Singapore to formalise my interest in the arts and particularly in Fine Art.
LASALLE School of the Arts in Singapore was my choice of school (there were only two art schools there when I started my Diploma in Fine Arts and culminated with a First Degree Honours in Fine Arts.
We have now returned to New zealand where I have joined with a group of Artists in a working studio. |
