Artist Statement:
As a commercial photographer for 38 years, I have always enjoyed photographing “for myself”, since it is in the fine arts area that I can interpret a scene or subject without the constraints of time, budget, and commercial client concept.
My personal fine arts work tends to be in three areas: nature (with a pronounced penchant for trees), vignettes of places I’ve traveled to, and portraits.
The fascination with trees has something to do with being humbled by their majesty, as well as feeling connected with wood as I do when I pursue another favorite interest, furniture making.
In the travel vignettes, I attempt to capture something of the essence of a country or place by selecting a scene – not really a landscape - which contains elements of design as well as a sense of the ambience of the area.
The portraits are the result of my never-ending fascination with the incredible variety of the human countenance, and these personal portraits have frequently lead to advertising and annual report assignments.
Bill graduated from John Carroll University, majoring in Chemistry, with minors in Philosophy and Math. He pursues photography as a career because "I can't imagine doing anything else".
