HMS AMETHYST AND THE YANGTZE
INCIDENT
by Richard Doman (date added

Again, Dennis Andrews captured
the atmosphere in this
picture. Amethyst is under
fire, damaged and has shell
bursts all around her. The
ship is shown in high detail

Artist Statement for Dennis Andrews

I am a British artist specialising in naval paintings of a period from the early 20th century to the present day. My portfolio includes artwork commissioned for the book 'HMS Warspite: Ships of the Royal Navy' by Pen & Sword publishing, creating the cover art for this book and its successor in the series, HMS London.
I have also completed a number of naval illustrations for Warships International Fleet Review, a UK-based, monthly naval magazine.

I work mainly in oils on canvas and, sometimes, board. While accuracy is important for me, in my paintings I endeavour to capture the maritime atmosphere, the ship in its element.

I live in the historic naval port of Plymouth and I am the artist-in-residence at HM Naval Base Devonport, the largest military dockyard in Europe. I am currently working on a portfolio of paintings of the Naval Base, which will be presented for viewing later next year (2009).
