Artist Statement:
Wheeler’s artistic emergence began after a corporate and academic career. A former Fortune 300 executive, he painted as a therapeutic diversion. An interest in art was inherited from his mother, a regional portrait artist, and his uncle, a director at The Rockefeller Foundation and The Henry Ford Museum.
Making his exhibition debut in 2005 at The Carrie Haddad Gallery, he has since shown in NYC, Massachusetts and Washington DC.
His work includes atmospheric color field abstractions and “narrative” works composed to tell a story, evoke a memory or arouse a feeling in the viewer. His influences are Rothko and Hopper, and his palette is driven by such diverse artists as: Diebenkorn, van Gogh, Schiele and Lautrec. Wheeler’s individual style aims to create work that is “as little derivative as possible”.
An instinct for color, composition and energy allows the viewer to bring his own feelings to the work, thus overlaying their own sensibility. The paintings change as do the thoughts of the viewer, so that they never become stale.
Wheeler is represented by : Carrie Haddad Gallery, Hudson, NY, and Nevin Kelly Gallery, Washington, DC. He is a native of New York’s Hudson Valley, and resides in Ballston ...
