Artist Statement for Stephen Wheldon

I am essentially a figurative artist with a passion for painting the human form in a traditional and realistic manner. Whilst my working methods are centuries old, I do aim to provide art collectors with contemporary pieces which have a somewhat 'classical' feel to them. Hopefully, this will become the hallmark of my work in years to come.

As you will see from my portfolio, most of my works are quite small. They often employ very delicate glazes in order to produce the subtle graduations of tone which form the contours of the human body. Subtlety has always been my chief criteria when painting figures - both in my technique and my choice of subject matter. I often remind myself that monochromatic or muted colour is the key to keeping flesh tones harmonious and always strive to make my nudes easy on the eye.

I now have a growing number of collectors worldwide who share my love of realism and to whom I am deeply indebted. Hopefully, you too will enjoy browsing through my portfolio and will appreciate some of the work here.
