"Live out of your imagination, not your history." Stephen Covey said that, and I ask you... How does imagination color your life?
Sometimes I feel like Alice in Wonderland, trying to figure out what is the sense of things. It seems that more and more these days common sense is being left our of the decision making process. Especially when it comes to our kids and their education. When the money becomes short it is the classes that provide children with the opportunity to think outside the box that get cut out... Art, Music, Dance are all forms of creative expression and when you deprive children these modes of positive outlet to replace them with more reading, more math the children do not experience a balanced education.
Who said that a child could not learn math through music? Music is the most beautiful expression of Math! Just listen to any of Bethoven's sonnatas. Who said that children can not learn to read and write through the Visual Arts? Just ask one of those young Picasso's fans. A child can learn to read a person by learning to read VenMeer's paintings.
Before there was literature there was drawing. Humans started documenting our stories through pictures and every human step has been put into pictures by one artist or another. Let us also think of the universality of the visual expression. I do not have to speak Italian to be intrigued by the Mona Lisa, Dutch to feel the softness of Hare. I do not even have to speak English to Warhol's sense of humor and irony. Good art transcends language and even sometimes cultural barriers, because it documents simply the human condition. It brings us together as humans. A bunch of people who share the "Third Rock From the Sun."
We need the arts because they provide balance and an opportunity to let out our creative spirit. Be it a Movement and Dance class, a Music lesson, Finger Painting! Our children need to have those outlets which also encourages them to think outside the box, challenge them to use their higher thinking skills to solve artistic problems and integrate their knowledge so that they can use it in any one of life's situations...
