Artist Statement:
My painting is based on the figure and it's relationship to inanimate objects in obscure locales. Mysterious, symbolic, and intimate, the dramas unfold in a place where time and space are compressed. I paint for the mind's eye. Logic and common sense only interfere. My work lives in a visionary world, where symbolism and dislocation breathe. Where gravitational laws are often abandoned and the images capture moments when the mind is disoriented.
The figures drift among fractured thoughts, architectural motifs and isolated everyday items. Subjects cross-reference each other. People often appear to be entirely encased in their own thoughts. They are sometimes repeated within the same painting, lost in thought. The paintings inspire thought on the minutiae of daily living. Rather than simple colorful pictures; instead my work are mindscapes; where imagination is the key for the visual/emotional experience. In my dream world, ideas blossom and time momentary stands still.
I work from live models, charcoal drawings and a very active imagination. As a painting progresses, I begin a narrative inspired by the various subjects at hand.
