Artist Statement for William Secrest

I offer paintings tethered to my personal urgings, intimates of my drive to explore. As an artist, I aspire to interpret the tension between stillness and flow, and the innate energy behind the process of life. I view color as the initiation to the primal and the playful, impacting the area of the psyche where we form our emotional being. To commune with the energy of color connects us to the human condition and the ethereal seeds of our consciousness. My goal is to stay open and lucid, to illuminate transformation and the invocation of mystery.
I seek to discover and explore relationships of the familiar and the forgotten to the unexpected and unrealized. And upon this stage there is a natural transference of energy between that which is alive and that in metamorphosis. I take this artistic journey to understand the communion between the outer landscape and the mystical visibility of our senses. I hope the viewer will engage with the painting, and allow their subconscious to absorb the inner landscape.
There is an abstract endearment to all interpretation, where intent creates the space and form within the resonance of the imagination. My paintings represent what surrounds my life, my purpose and my curiosity. They are abstract metaphors for my journey, rooted and uprooted, to reflect upon synergy and validation.
