Artist Statement:
I paint people – usually as portraits, sometimes as small groups, or occasionaly as large crowds.
Portraits are very special. They are a way to memorialize important life stages, such as birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, new businesses, or a promotion. They are a form of self-expression. A portrait is for posterity.
In addition, painted portraits are great as decorative images. Someone you do not know may be a conversation piece for your next party, or even a way to gain instant new family members.
Many of my non-commissioned portraits are of people I have seen, photographed, but never really got to know. But each was chosen because they had something special that caught my interest.
I love to watch people. My wife and I enjoy sitting near a bustling walkway, frequently with a cup or glass of something, and viewing the world passing by – always with my camera close at hand.
I find them many of them fun to paint. Please enjoy them with me by exploring my paintings here online and many others at my website:

| Your Personal Biography |
Born in England, Peter Worsley came to California in 1956, and to Santa Barbara in 1970. His serious work in the visual arts began in 1996, after retiring from some fifty years in industry. Though largely self-taught, he studied with some of the wonderful artists who teach locally.
Always, he has a strong desire to include people in his paintings. To him, people add life. After initially choosing to work in watercolor, Peter gradually introduced opaque gouache into his work, producing many gouache paintings over several years. From these early struggles, Peter has evolved to where today he paints figurative art, using oil on canvas.
His paintings are memories of interesting people he has seen, but usually did not get to know.
When traveling, Peter records hundreds of digital photos. Every now and again he like an image enough to use in a painting. In his studio, he brings this and other related images to his laptop screen, and then paints directly.
Using both abstract or natural settings, his paintings are prized for their compelling colors and strong sense of composition. Peter try to captures peoples’ feelings and interactions with subtlety and humor. His figurative art, is often tied into an underlying back story.
Peter mixes his colors from a few lightfast pigments. This often results in paintings with colorful backgrounds and bold painterly details.
Active in the local art community, Worsley is a Past President of both the Santa Barbara Art Association and the Goleta Valley Art Association, a member of the Santa Barbara Studio Artists, and a Founder and Director of Santa Barbara Visual Arts Alliance. |
