Artist Statement:
The tendency to
associate art forms
with different sensory
experiences--sound
with music, vision
with painting and
movement with dance,
for example--marks
an assumption that
different art forms
are not the same,
and that they function
to communicate in ways
that are distinct and
qualitatively different
from each other.
Marshall McLuhan’s
postulate that “the
medium is the message”
encapsulates this idea.
Not only are different
media not inter-
changeable, but
they are irrecon-
cilable. They carry
meanings which are
fundamentally different
from each other. I would
like to open the
possibility that these
boundaries are much
more fluid than we are
led to assume. The
inevitable overlap
is evident in the
experience of audio
reverb as a physical
sensation, or of
experiencing a dance
concert as something
that is as much visual
as kinesthetic.
As someone actively
producing work in dance
and visual media, these
questions were, for me,
of pressing personal
concern. Through the
Interdisciplinary
Studies Program at the
University of Southern
California, I was able
to propose a series of
classes and independent
research drawing upon
the resources of the
departments of Theatre,
Art Studio and Art
