Artist Reviews:
"I'm writing to express my
appreciation for your work as
a sculptor. The pieces I have
seen...have a quality that
transcends conventional
artistic categories: you have
given them the power to evoke
a rich and productive anxiety
in the viewer, a rare artistic
achievement. You have

Artist Statement for Zahava Sherez

I know diversity. I have been enriched by it throughout my life. I am tri-cultural, having migrated twice in my life, with roots in Latin America, the Middle East, and North America. The cultures that shaped me often emphasized the differences between people. I chose to focus on the similarities, to tap into the connection between all and everybody, to be touched and enriched by multiple diversities. My art stems from these experiences and the search for new ways of finding balance and interconnection.

I have two main bodies of work - stone and clay.

With stone I work with the tension between motion and stillness, strength and vulnerability. I seek balance where there seems to be none. I work with heavy, massive stones and search for ways to suspend them in space. This allows the stone to transform itself, seems to become lighter, able to fly and dance.

My work in clay is more figurative. I take elements or concepts from nature and combine them with human bodies. I explore new ways of connecting by using, as a point of strength, the different characteristics of the subjects. Here I merge with the medium. I push and pull my thoughts and feelings onto the matter until the finished piece emerges.
