Artist Statement for Andrew Zega

Andrew Zega and Bernd H. Dams create architectural watercolors of historic American and European buildings and garden ornament. Their work is prized for its realist technique, employed to bring destroyed structures back to life, if only on paper, and is found in the foremost international public and private collections. Trained as both architects and historians, they are also authors of five books on architectural history illustrated with their drawings.

They exhibit regularly at Didier Aaron, Inc., the Manhattan-based Old Master paintings and drawings dealers (see "Galleries" below), where a number of their watercolors are on permanent view. They also exhibit at the Galerie de Bayser, 69 rue Ste-Anne, 75002 Paris.

Museums and public institutions that collect their work include the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, the National Design Museum of the Smithsonian Institution (with three works); The Musee des Arts-Decoratifs, Paris (with six works); the New-York Historical Society; the Museum of the Ile-de-France at Sceaux; Princeton University; and the Avery Architectural Library of Columbia University.

Private collectors include several trustees of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as directors and trustees of the National Gallery of Art, the Morgan Library, The Frick Collection, the New York Public Library, and numerous collectors intimately involved with the arts.

Their most recent book, Versailles (Connaissance et Memoires, Paris, 2007), is a signed, hand-bound, limited-edition artist's book. Copies of their first limited-edition work, Chinoiseries, reside in the collections of the Getty Center's Artist's Book Collection and the Rare Books Collection of the Princeton University Library.

Their earlier books are:
Palaces of the Sun King (Rizzoli, 2002)
Garden Vases/Vases de Jardin (Alain de Gourcuff Editeur, 2000)
Pleasure Pavilions and Follies/La Folie de Batir (Flammarion, 1995)
