Artist Statement:
My current work is inspired by the Scottish landscape, for an artist interested in colour and textures it is an ideal location. I am fascinated by the very particular atmospheric qualities light or sometimes lack of light we receive in Scotland. It is so often affected by clouds that feel as solid as the ground casting waves and blue shadow over the hills, by walls of rain that move over the land, hiding it like fog. In contrast light often cuts dramatically through the landscape as it is escaping through a pin prick in the blanket of clouds. Its winter beauty, when the light comes directly and almost horizontally across the hills, golden in colour it warms and glows off the surfaces and textures to touches and throws long shadows in its wake.
I am using the paint to create, richly varied textural surfaces, to achieve an expressionistic descriptive of the landscape. The paint I use is often mixed with raw pigments to increase the vibrancy and depth of the colour. This process affects the surface qualities of the dry painting, creating strong contrasts of flat matt and velvet or glossy textures. With the application of paint I am trying ...
