Artist Statement for John Nash
"Perhaps if I had a hundred lifetimes to waste before living one of significance, I wouldn't paint, or write as I do. The truth, or the fact that beauty, body, sex or sexiness--things of Biblical loveliness--glow in shades of cultural depravity, amuses me. But I refuse to glorify the molasses of repression."
John Nash was born in Bakersfield, CA in April 1944. Growing up, his family moved throughout the western states, allowing John to attend over 17 different elementary schools, from rural, one-room classrooms to military academy. He has painted continuously from the age of 3, and still loves poster paint.
After finishing high school in LA, John studied at Southern Oregon College in Ashland,OR; Shasta Junior College in Redding,CA; and in 1964 entered the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland,CA. During 1967-68 he helped inaugurate CCAC's experimental campus at El Molino near Patzcuaro,Mexico.
Having completed a double major in printmaking and painting, John and a female classmate began traveling together in the spring of 1969. Following a year's worth of camping throughout Europe, including a lenghty Moroccan visit, the two were married in Pacific Grove, CA.
John with his family has lived and painted in Morocco, Spain, France, Northern Europe, Mexico and Hawaii. During the 80's he established a mountaintop studio in Julian,CA. In the 90's John and his family lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Returning to CA, he is now painting and writing in his studio near Palm Springs.
