Artist Statement for Zolita Sverdlove

Zolita Sverdlove has created a wide body of artwork including many oils, watercolors, monotypes and prints. These cover many themes ranging from landscapes to seascapes to still lifes, to cityscapes and numerous other themes.

Many of Zolita Sverdlove's paintings are concerned with capturing moments of glory in nature. Her work is strong and color is of greatest importance – in the tradition of fauvists.

Her landscapes are based on two contrasting thematic ideas that create tension in the work:

1. Sensuous, sumptuous and baroque light and color formations which are applied with Fauvist color and spontaneous brushwork.

2. Dark, brooding, starkly forbidden landscape elements with cubist planes of space intersecting to create an architectonic space.

Much of Zolita Sverdlove's work is concerned with nature's unbridled grandeur: raw nature and the primeval landscape. Her goal is to create a new vision of old subjects in contemporary terms. Oceans, mountains, flowers, trees and sunsets may seem corny, but they convey nostaglia, associations and sentiment to people. By recreating nature with a modern approach, an emotional connection is made to the viewer while at the same time, the work is artistically creative. The challenge is to make a new statement about the familiar.
