Artist Statement for Rik Verlin Livingston At Zono Art Productions

The "In the Garden" series first came to mind when I was camping at a nude camp site with my girlfriend-at-the-time. I had happened to bring along some art books and came across one of the countless early paintings of Adam and Eve, nude and surrounded by forest. The similarity (and differences) between art and our real life circumstances influenced a few exploratory sketches.
In the camping trips that followed, I brought some wood panels that I had cut into different shapes and beveled, a fairly extensive palette of acrylics in small tubes, and, not just art books, but books of antiques, and a big coffee table book of photography taken of San Francisco landmarks. This is how the series started....
On one level, knowledgeable viewers may appreciate "visual quotes" from art historical sources as diverse as Bosch, Hicks, and Rousseau.
But, in a more important sense, what evolved was a world of idyllic imagination, where all the world's problems were solved - at least, in paint... Humans of all races and sexual preferences are shown to be SO in harmony with nature that they've moved their furniture outside and the San Francisco Bay Area seems to have become more forested! It's all in fun of course, but hopefully a small inspiration toward change might be effected...
