  • Artists Describing Their Art:

Avril Ward - Artist's statement. Creating has become an intricately woven part of my life. I must express nature, as it is my window to God. I must delight in the human body, a marvel that never ceases to amaze. I must express love and joy-this keeps them tangible in my life. I must trust my instincts and skills allowing them to lead me in the right direction. Most importantly: if my art can move a person to pause, think, smile, ponder, cry, laugh, be encouraged or give them hope, then I have served my purpose in life." Jack Hill - All of my sculptural work is bronze, cast in the "lost wax" technique. Besides sculpting the original work, I am hands on with all the phases of the casting process, including the molds, waxes, metal, and application of the patinas. My foundry experience allows me to ensure the quality and integrity of each idea, from inspiration to final presentation. The ideas are born from observation of the human existence, in all its splendor and absurdity. The addition of my own whimsy and uncommon approach brings about an expression of life in the permanence of bronze. People are only one part of the whole planet and my anthropomorphic works are an exploration of the blending of man into various parts of the environment. With attention to anatomic detail and a tongue-in-cheek twist I wish to stimulate the imagination and, maybe, tickle the funny bone. Questions? Call me at 305/240-3238 A new line of work has been added that I call "Body Armor". The human form is treated as if skin was an armor that could be put on or removed as needed. If it had been lost long ago and recently rediscovered, what would it look like. ...

Ivan Kosta - My mission? To give some resemblance of our lives, to touch our fears, concerns, evoke dreams and give hope in time of dispair... ...

Steve Kiene - My art expresses fundamental cosmological and spiritual concepts such as the balances in nature, regeneration and growth, and the interdependence of all things. I want to express how man & nature are interconnected. In today's modern culture, many have forgotten, that all things, living and inert, have a part in our relationship with life itself. The tree branch carvings illustrate how man is just a branch of the larger organic cosmos. Where Man and Nature become one....

Ione Citrin - Ione is an avant garde artist whose artistic expression takes fantastic shape through her diverse oil and watercolor paintings, bronze sculptures, found object collages and mixed media assemblages. Her paintings and sculptures range from abstract to realistic to impressionistic - all visionary interpretations from her imaginative soul. "When I paint, I dip my brush in my soul... Being an Artist is a life force, not a career choice. Each piece represents a fragment of my life's work. I present the world artistically as I see it, as I wish to see it, and occasionally as I once saw it. You see, It is my identity. Without this expression of self, I am nothing. Through my art I give love." Ione uses only one name but a variety of styles to soothe her wild imagination. A native of Chicago, she is a former television star and commercial voice-over artist. Now she wins awards and sells her creativity through her hands instead of through her larynx. Her art is as original as she is - bold, colorful and highly decorative....

Louise Parenteau - ARTISTIC STATEMENT I studied fine arts at the University Of Quebec In Montreal (1986-1991). I was involved in various artistic activities in which I took a strong stand against injustice, poverty, and social exclusion. My work took shape using different methods of research and observation. I articulated my artistic approach inspired by existential human sufferings. I created portraits of individuals with unusual physical traits, expressions, deformities, attitudes... These characters inspired me to use colour in contrasts and splashes. My aim was to express the life animating the characters by an internal light. For my installations, I used a physical space to transpose socio-political situations and dramatic events. With the barest resources, my intention was to stimulate the interest of the viewer. My material supplies: Acrylic, rubbish, wood, metal, rust, polystyrene panels, personal objects, used clothing, etc. In 1995, I realized that I had reached limits with my artistic approach. I decided to have a period of questioning with the aim of going further in my research in terms of intention and expression. This process enabled me to explore, to experiment with different materials and to reposition myself using sculpture as my main form of expression. Ever...

Stan Harmon - Retirement brought Stan Harmon's passion into the daylight. Finally quitting his "day job", after a career with an environmental water management company, Harmon found himself able to devote more time to artistic endeavors that he had previously crammed into late night hours after everyone else was asleep. Following his dream to learn to blow glass he enrolled at the famous Penland School of Craft in the North Carolina mountains, quickly succumbing to the addictive nature of glass blowing. However, blowing glass requires at least one helper and that wouldn't fit into his new schedule (which was no schedule). Not to mention the constant overhead involved in firing a glass furnace 24/7. While at Penland, Harmon was introduced to the technique of kiln-forming glass which being taught in the next studio. This proved to be the best of both worlds, embracing the serendipity of hot glass creation and the advantages of a flexible schedule because a computer runs the kiln, taking care of the most time consuming aspects of creation. Thus no helper was needed, no outrageous gas bill to stress about, and still reaping the creative opportunities afforded by hot glass. Kiln-formed or fused glass ...

Jane Jaskevich - Jane Jaskevich Artist Statement Jaskevich is a carver of dreams in stone. Her mythical figures borrow elements from ancient cultures. Jane creates figures by combining various materials such as different stones, wood and found objects. She pays homage to the stonesO Greco-Roman roots. Her recent series deals with the incomplete figure and is entitled OThe Silhouette Series O. Partial heads that can be read as a silhouette are combined with full bodies. These sculptures suggest multiple ideas; ancient ruin, contemporary dreams, and flat vs 3D. 2012 brought exhibitions in the NYC Affordable Art Fair and her sculptures being published in Contemporary Sculptors by Kracun/ McFadden. Numerous Southeast galleries represent her. Jane received her BFA from University of Georgia and Masters in Art from Florida State with additional studies in Pietrasanta, Italy. Her public collections include an outdoor sculpture in a Michigan church and three sculptures for NationsBank Headquarters in Tampa. Jane has two sculptures in the permanent collection of the Polk Museum of Art in Lakeland, Florida. Her large-scale bronze sculptures are the focal point for the Tampa GTE Data Center. . ...

Mircea Popescu - Mircea Popescu Statement In my work time is an active element. I paint like I build a sculpture using simple forms, lines and textures representing days, hours and archetypes such as: books, letters, numbers or primordial elements. The surface; canvas, wood, or paper is painted from dark to light, a technique used in the byzantine art. Using classical principles, the golden section, the structures of my compositions are based on rigorous diagrams of simple geometric figures. Considering that contemporary art is characterized by invention and experimentation, texture becomes an essential element of my paintings that comes naturally from the way the paste is applied, transparent layers of paint creating new surfaces. Light is the most surprising element in my paintings which is a result of my technique; the method I mix the primary colors, pigments and other substances What is interesting, not all of them contain the same light, but all of them radiate energy. ...

Robert Hargrave - Beauty is often found in unexpected places. Few people would expect anything made from plywood to be beautiful, yet they are surprised and intrigued when they learn this fact about my work. I laminate a very special Birch plywood from Russia to a darker Lauan plywood from Indonesia, then carve them to reveal the previously hidden core. The results are often compared to some rare and exotic wood, skillfully brought to life. The Plywood Sculpture line consists of nearly seventy contemporary designs that are functional as well as decorative. There are over two dozen mirrors in many shapes and sizes. The designs range from figurative to geometric, from celestial to functionally conservative. Several figurative sculptures are balanced by some furniture designs. The line is rounded out by many gift items, such as picture frames, boxes and other accessories." All of my designs have a fluid sense of movement, emphasized by the black glue line. The alternating light and dark woods have a variety of colors in natural, however dyed colors offer even more possibilities. Each piece is signed and given a smooth, maintenance free lacquer finish. A free, full color catalog is available upon request. ...
