  • Artists Describing Their Art:

Mircea Popescu - Mircea Popescu Statement In my work time is an active element. I paint like I build a sculpture using simple forms, lines and textures representing days, hours and archetypes such as: books, letters, numbers or primordial elements. The surface; canvas, wood, or paper is painted from dark to light, a technique used in the byzantine art. Using classical principles, the golden section, the structures of my compositions are based on rigorous diagrams of simple geometric figures. Considering that contemporary art is characterized by invention and experimentation, texture becomes an essential element of my paintings that comes naturally from the way the paste is applied, transparent layers of paint creating new surfaces. Light is the most surprising element in my paintings which is a result of my technique; the method I mix the primary colors, pigments and other substances What is interesting, not all of them contain the same light, but all of them radiate energy. ...

Don Dougan - My work comprises both abstracted and figurative imagery executed in a variety of mixed materials, with stone being the predominate medium. Other materials used (usually in conjunction with stone) include foundry cast metals, carved and joined wood, cast and fabricated plastics, cold-worked and kiln-formed glass, cast and carved hydraulic cements, cast/formed paper, welded/fabricated metals, gilding, and found/assembled objects. The more abstracted imagery is worked in pedestal pieces, large freestanding sculptures, and in wall-mounted relief sculptures. The figurative lip series is usually presented in wall-mounted reliefs, deep shadowbox framing, and occasionally as either a pedestal piece or a large freestanding work. The most recently begun series of work comprises pedestal-sized pieces using the imagery of the ship or the boat hull. Each series or each type of work allows me to express aspects of the human condition - the more abstracted works tend to reveal a more universal emotional/rational characterization of subject matter, the lip series tends to allow sensuality, humor, and more visceral expressions, while the ship series delves into personal/cultural memories and emotional journeys. Penko Platikanov - Sculpture is an act of creating art, and a philosophy on living. It is my belief that my artwork follows some means of a universal law I call "Creation and Beauty." Stated simply, there is no doubt a responsibility inherent toward created forms. It's quality, it's energy, and the messages released through my actions are expressions that I work toward being aware of. This is the first thing I concern myself with before I step into my studio and stand before the set block of clay on any given day. A quality sculpture has to be a product of spiritual, mental and technical abilities. Great works of art should possess deep roots in human spirituality, as well as depth regarding thought and feeling. Artwork can appear as fleeting inspirations or a belabored process based on the experience of the artist. In turn, if an artwork is created with the intention of lasting decades and being viewed for many generations, it has to be technologically strong and skillfully made. Important thought is the search for quality. Quality, which is proportional to the amount of effort, must be made to the best of the artist's ability. The Ancient Greeks ...

Gary Chris Christopherson - Abstract sculpture by GChris is what he terms "progressive art" and is mission-driven. Progressive art is art with a purpose and artist as advocate. "Art as advocacy; advocacy as art." The call to artists and people generally is to embrace both art and advocacy, use their synergy, and advance progressive values. Advanced by the art are core progressive values - reducing human vulnerability, maximizing human potential, saving our environment, and living at "peace on and with the earth." Underlying it all is the driving desire to "save the world", as best as we as people can. Toward that end, GChris abstract mobiles and stabiles help drive toward a positive progressive vision of the future. They portray strong driving forces -- the desire for knowledge, spirit and justice. High level thought, being, and positive interrelationships are not ends but new foundations from which progress springs. Progressive art supports the continuous striving for absolute knowledge, absolute spirit and perfected being with full recognition this is an inevitable, unending, inspiring and liberating human enterprise. To achieve the vision, they also help explore threats of vulnerability, conflict, and chaos. The mobiles and stabiles address these threats, glean whatever positives they contain, and advocate major progression...

Michael Tieman - As Michael Tieman sees it, "The role of an artist from the dawn of time has been as a visual storyteller. The stories my paintings and sculpture tell are ones of confidence, strength, passion, playful sophistication and the celebration of life." "I create my bronze sculpture as a three dimensional painting, texture becomes the Impressionistic impasto brushstroke, color is the play of light and shadows across the surfaces, and detail is the impression of movement." ...

Ione Citrin - Ione is an avant garde artist whose artistic expression takes fantastic shape through her diverse oil and watercolor paintings, bronze sculptures, found object collages and mixed media assemblages. Her paintings and sculptures range from abstract to realistic to impressionistic - all visionary interpretations from her imaginative soul. "When I paint, I dip my brush in my soul... Being an Artist is a life force, not a career choice. Each piece represents a fragment of my life's work. I present the world artistically as I see it, as I wish to see it, and occasionally as I once saw it. You see, It is my identity. Without this expression of self, I am nothing. Through my art I give love." Ione uses only one name but a variety of styles to soothe her wild imagination. A native of Chicago, she is a former television star and commercial voice-over artist. Now she wins awards and sells her creativity through her hands instead of through her larynx. Her art is as original as she is - bold, colorful and highly decorative....

Dieter Picchio-Specht - Art, creativity and imagination have always played an important part in my life, although I have only started to fully concentrate on painting a few years ago. This passion has always been part of me. I have finally given up my work as a general manager in industry - to dedicate all my time to painting. At last I do what I have always wanted to do. It is simply that a dream has finally come true. Even during my years at secondary school my paintings were awarded prizes and I should have enrolled in art classes after I passed my A-levels. In fact, a renowned company manufacturing ceramics offered me a scholarship, which I was unable to accept at the time. I have always kept up with painting as landscapes and images, abstract and impressionist. Since some years now I am able to paint full-time and fill canvas after canvas with my ideas. My new studio is right in the centre of the village of Arcegno, surrounded by wooded hills, near to Ascona, a well-known tourist centre at the Lago Maggiore in the South of Switzerland. I apply the paints directly to the canvas with a spatula. ...

Stefan Van Der Ende - My sculptures are Solutions for Non/existing Problems . Now is the time to collect them. They are rare and unique ,and there are not many of them , also due to the big amount of time it takes to make the biggerones in wood and stone . They are made dreaming/thinking and working intensively , whith the intention to be able communicate emotion through their abstract/associative visual appearence which relate to subconcious processes in the human mind .(specialy mine ofcourse ) There are often more pictures of one sculpture , because ,as you know you have to see sculptures from more sides , to get a good impression .

Selin Melek Aktan - God created world from fire and water. Then looked at the earth,he thought it was looking very empty and made human. TO HAVE A MORE FUN He put the colours on his palette and painted world with them. HE GAVE US THIS EARTH AS A PRESENT Human liked his present and they started to dance GOD LOOKED AT HIS ART He enjoyed what he did. I am a very independent person and probably my paintings are too. I don't paint because of the trend, or mode, I paint because something or somebody fascinates me. It could be nature, a face, a story, an event, colors (especially, I adore strong colors ), a song, an object, my feelings, my thoughts, my dreams: never ending possibilities of improbability. I definitely love beauty. I am trying to express my personal sense of beauty and truth in my paintings. So every painting is different. There is not only one style in which I like to work .I traveled to the four corners of the earth, and each place I visited added to my desire for unique artistic expression.Wherever I went, I found new influences directing my brush strokes or guiding my hands ...

Beatriz Cunha - The creation of my pieces starts with the observation of the complex relations established between phenomena as diverse as nature's fertility, man made objects or art history. It's an intimate work in search of integrating conflicting forces, ultimately leading to the transmutation of the parts in to a transcending whole. The shape contains in it self the memory of the evolution from one condition to another in a process of transformation that is at the same time natural, personal and cultural. ...
