Artwork Description:
In 1980 Mihail traveled to Africa where he cast a live, wild bull elephant. The elephant was never harmed. CAST THE SLEEPING ELEPHANT SERIES originated in 1976. The series include bronze editions, paintings, prints, drawings, multi media objects and a 1979 poster. Mihail incorporated the cast of the elephant in creating this work of art as a symbol of all wildlife. The first of the ten bronzes was installed at the United Nations Headquarters in New York by Kenya, Namibia and Nepal. Inaugurated on November 18, 1998 by Secretary General Kofi Annan. The edition is for the benefit of Cast the Sleeping Elephant Trust, an IRS 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the survival of elephants in their natural habitats.
