i think it is time to make a statement to viewers. by now you must know that i carve on ivory, bone, antlers, etc. for many many years i worked with elephants and i love them dearly. and, i am a Buddhist nun so my beliefs do not allow killing ANYTHING. when i began carving i found a reputable ivory and bone dealer who uses only legal ivory. legal ivory is either fossilized or pre-ban and neither of these take animal lives. as we go thru our lives situations come up that force a bit of compromise. i feel that no animal is loosing its life because of my art. but if i was not discriminate in purchasing the ivory i could not, with any kind of conscience, purchase it. artists take chances in order to make others think.. one time, i was given a commission to do a wood relief carving of hunters. well, i just couldn't carve dead people or whatever.but i took the commission and carved a piece titled "revenge of the forest creatures". there were hunters armed with knives and swords and even falcons.
