"Directions: Sam Taylor-Wood"
1999-07-15 until 1999-10-17
Hirshorn Museum and Sculpture Garden
Washington, DC,
USA United States of America
British artist Sam Taylor-Wood b. 1967 will feature her projected-video installation Noli Me Tangere, 1998, in her first solo show in an
American museum. Emotionally and spatially disorienting, this two-sided, floor-to-ceiling projection depicts a larger-than-life acrobat straining,
like Atlas, to hold up the ceiling. Such mesmerizing imagery characterizes the work of Taylor-Wood, who focuses on the often conflicted
psychology of human relationships. One of Londons most noted young artists, Taylor-Wood was a 1998 nominee for the prestigious Turner
Prize. The exhibition, organized by Associate Curator Olga M. Viso, has been generously supported by the Elizabeth Firestone Graham
Foundation and Lannan Foundation. It will be accompanied by an illustrated brochure. Directions Gallery, third floor.
