"Mysteries of the Mummies:"
1999-07-19 until 2001-06-01
Michael C. Carlos Museum
Atlanta, GA,
USA United States of America
The Carlos Museum is now in the process of cleaning and conserving objects contained in its important recent acquisition of remarkable ancient Egyptian
artifacts. This work, along with detailed scientific analysis, will take place over the next two years. An intriguing peek at some ofthe objects included in
the collection will take place via a rotating exhibit of at least one major conserved artifact approximately every sixmonths. Beginning July 19 the first
objects on display will include the beautifully painted coffin of Iawtaysheret, from an important Thebanfamily that served the Nubian rulers of Egypt in
the 25th Dynasty (ca.700B.C.). Also from the same time period, the first installation willfeature the coffin and mummy of a child and a set of limestone
Canopic jars (which held the organs removed in the process of mummification). The rotating exhibitions will culminate in a special exhibition of the entire
collection in Spring 2001, titled Mysteries of the Mummies: The Art and Archaeology of Death in Ancient Egypt.
