1999-07-03 until 1999-09-05
Baltimore Museum of Art
Baltimore, MD,
USA United States of America
Kings, heroes, and rites of passage
are celebrated with music, dance,
masks, and sculpture by one of
Africas most artistically rich cultures.
Underscoring the BMAs
commitment to profiling the arts of
Africa, Chokwe! examines the
contributions of the worlds
second-largest continent to the
history of art.
This fascinating exhibition explores
the sacred rituals of the Chokwe
people of Angola, Congo
(Kinshasa), and Zambia and their
ceremonial artwork from the last two
centuries. About 150 exquisite
objects–sculptures of ancestral
chiefs, thrones, decorated chairs,
beaded crowns, masks, ceremonial
scepters, basketry, and ceramics–are
on view.
The exhibition is organized and
circulated by the Birmingham
Museum of Art, Alabama, with
generous sponsorship provided by
The Rockefeller Foundation and the
National Endowment for the Arts.
