"INSOMNIA - TECHNO TRIBES"
1999-07-27 until 1999-09-19
The Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki
Helsinki, ,
FI Finland
Insomnia is an installation-like techno club presenting
the visuals of techno culture: flyers (leaflets or invitation
cards marketing an event), album covers, and
typography. The techno sound world materialises as
sound sculpture. The genres included are ambient,
house, trip hop, gabber, techno, trance, jungle, drum n
bass.
Techno was not born in a vacuum: the history of
humans, machines and music is already one hundred
years old. The roots of techno artists are in the Italian
Futurist movement (L. Russolo, F.T. Marinetti),
electronic German kraurock, such as Krafts werk, and
postmodern experiencing. The exhibition also includes
Internet connections and fringe events including visiting
DJs.
Flyers have been assembled from collections around
the world: Finland, Great Britain, France, Germany,
Italy, Spain, the USA, Japan, Australia, Russia…
Eeropekka Rislakki is curator of the exhibition, and the
installation is mounted by artist Asko Sutinen. Sam
Inkinen is in charge of the theoretical and philosophical
exhibition material.
