"Grant Winner Announced"
1999-08-01 until 1999-08-01
Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation
Montreal, QC,
CA Canada
Ms. Darlene Nguyen-Ely, the Seattle-based sculptor has been named to
receive a second grant from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation of
Montreal, Quebec, CANADA. The foundation was founded in 1955 by C.G.
Greenshields, Q.C. in memory of his mother. The purpose of the
foundation is to aid talented artists under 32 years of age. Awards are
limited to candidates working in the following: painting, drawing,
printmaking, and sculpture.
Miss Nguyen-Ely was selected from a worldwide competition of over 10,000
candidates.
Miss Nguyen-Ely is currently working on her Journey Continued Series.
She said: When working on the Journey Series, which dealt with images
of movement,
I became interested in the structures of the ships and airplanes that
are the
symbols of a journey. After breaking down the structures to their basic
components
I noticed a similarity to the basic component of animal and plant life,
the cell.
The simple elegant forms of multi-cell plants and animals seemed a
natural
extension of my earlier transportation forms. The journey is now
measured
in terms of scale rather than speed.
This switch to biological forms opened up a much greater freedom to
explore
shapes since nature seems to always be more imaginative in its choice of
forms, connecting cells together in playful spirals, rings and
zig-zags.
Ms. Nguyen-Ely is currently being represented by Diane Farris
(Vancouver, Canada), Sonia Zaks (Chicago,IL), Hunsaker/Schlesinger
(Santa Monica, CA), and Washington Square Gallery (San Francisco, CA ).
Her upcoming solo exhibitions will be at Diane Farris Gallery in
Vancouver, Canada in September of 1999 and Sonia Zaks Gallery in
Chicago, Illinois in October of 1999.
