Following a generous benefaction of 2 million from the Raymond Burton
Trust, to which the University has added a further 1 million, a new
Humanities Research Library is being planned by the University of York, to
be built alongside the main University Library. It will be a modern and
striking design, making an architectural statement about the importance of
humanities research in the University. The interior will be designed with
high quality in mind so that researchers will be attracted to work with
the collections in comfortable surroundings conducive to research.
The Library will contain special collections in print and other media,
housed in state-of-the-art environmental conditions, graduate study
facilities, multimedia PCs for access to electronic resources, seminar or
conference rooms and display areas. Also planned are a project suite and
a humanities incubation suite' for developing centres of new and
interdisciplinary research before they are established and large enough to
command their own office space elsewhere.
An EXHIBITION of selected treasures from the rare book library will take
place
to coincide with Britain's largest rare and antiquarian book fair.
