from Alias|Wavefront"
1999-08-13 until 0000-00-00
Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD) at The Ohio
State University
Columbus, OH,
USA United States of America
Alias|Wavefront, a Silicon Graphics Inc. company, has awarded a computer
animation software grant, valued at more than $6 million, to the
Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD) at The Ohio
State University. The award provides a significant number of licenses
for the industry‚s leading 3D computer animation and design software.
Ohio State, the academic leader in computer animation and design
programs, will use the software for inter-disciplinary teaching and
research at ACCAD, according to Judith Smith Koroscik, dean of Ohio
States College of the Arts. Ohio State has built a superior teaching
and research program in computer animation and design, and this generous
award will help us maintain our international stature, says Dean
Koroscik. Our students will use the most advanced technology, and our
state-of-the-art research will forge continual innovations for
Alias|Wavefront and other industry leaders. This award creates a
research partnership that is truly an investment in innovation by the
College of the Arts at Ohio State and private industry.
With the award, Alias|Wavefront will provide Maya ® and Studio software
licenses for 110 computer stations at ACCAD and the Department of
Industrial, Interior & Visual Communication Design. Says Maria Palazzi,
new associate director of ACCAD and assistant professor of industrial
design, Maya ® is professional level software being utilized by some of
the most prestigious studios in the design and entertainment industry.
It provides sophisticated tools for character animation, simulated
cloth and dynamics, 3D paint capabilities, spectacular rendering, and
a programming language that allows users to create their own tools to be
used within the software.
When announcing this award at SIGGRAPH (the computer animation
industry‚s annual conference of computer graphics and interactive
effects) today, Alias|Wavefront‚s Tracey Hawken, manager of global
education and training, said, We believe the hallmark of a successful
industry-education partnership is a win-win-win scenario when the
students, the educational institution and industry employers all
benefit. Ohio State University is ensuring that both the entertainment
and design industries will be well supplied with talented, skilled and
professional graduates. We are pleased to include Ohio State in our
Academic Provider Program.
With ACCAD, Ohio State provides an interdisciplinary environment for
sophisticated research and graduate-level instruction in computer
graphics and the arts, and is one of the only programs of its kind in
America. Graduates of Ohio State who have studied at ACCAD have
significant influence in the area of special effects in the
billion-dollar film industry. Every major production facility in the
business has the college‚s former students involved in current projects.
Wayne Carlson, director of ACCAD, says that education and research
opportunities at Ohio State will be enhanced by the acquisition of the
new software. Maya ® offers the most powerful and complete, integrated
solution for digital artists and animators on the market today, he
explains. Partnership with Alias|Wavefront allows us to enrich our
academic programs and to directly integrate our research with production
software.
