Indepth Arts News:
"Australian Perspecta 1999: Living Here Now"
1999-08-20 until 1999-10-18
Museum of Contemporary Art
Sydney, ,
AU Australia
This exhibition looks through art at living in Australia now; at how artists
approach issues affecting our sense of identity and place. These include
issues of reconciliation, cultural diversity and post-colonialism, or debates
around the relationship between economics and ethics, nationalism and
globalisation. Six artists will be selected, whose works collectively get
underneath the skin about what it is to live in Australia now.
Some works
look at the present through the prism of history, re-using past images to
articulate something about current ideas and debates. Other works plunder
the media-saturated present for signs of identification.
New works by selected artists may be accompanied by a small selection of
works from the MCA Collection that look at indigenous and non-indigenous
relationships with the land that confront the dispossession, alienation and
racism underpinning our culture.
