Castelli discovered and promoted many contemporary American artists who could now be considered modern masters. Representing Robert
Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes
Oldenburg, James Rosenquist, Robert Morris, Ellsworth Kelly, Kenneth Noland, Cy Twombly,
Donald Judd, Dan Flavin, Bruce Nauman, Richard Serra and Andy Warhol, Castelli could be credited for selling Europe on contemporary American art. It has also been said that his keen eye for what would sell shaped and directed the 1960’s art trends towards pop-art, minimalism and conceptual art – the successors of abstract expressionism. After a short illness Leo Castelli died at home in New York. On Sunday evening a small private service was held at his residence.
