The Corcoran Gallery of Art with the Portuguese Ministry of Culture in Lisbon and the Embassy
of Portugal in Washington presents an exhibition of the major modernist paintings and drawings
by Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso. The presentation features approximately 30 paintings as well as 20
works on paper and examines the role Souza-Cardoso played in the development of international
modernism.
Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso lived in Paris between 1906 and 1915, becoming friends with artists
such as Modigliani, Gris, Brancusi, Archipenko and Boccioni. During these heady vanguard times
in Paris and Portugal, Souza-Cardoso constructed creative variants on fauvism, cubism, futurism
and other avant-garde tendencies.
