Indepth Arts News:
"Rembrandt’s Treasures"
1999-09-25 until 2000-01-09
Rembrandt House
Amsterdam, ,
NL Netherlands
The exhibition is being staged in the
new wing of the Rembrandt House,
where visitors will see about a hundred
paintings, prints, drawings and objets
d’art. Many of these objects can be
found in paintings, drawings and prints
by Rembrandt. Although collecting
works of art was Rembrandt’s hobby,
he also used his collection as
inspiration for his own work and as
study material for his pupils. The works
of artists like Andrea Mantegna, Titian,
Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Lucas van
Leyden, Albrecht Dürer and Rubens
were a particular source of inspiration
for him. Their influence becomes
evident when their work is displayed
alongside Rembrandt’s. The paintings
that Rembrandt had on his walls at the
time of his bankruptcy, and in which he
dealt, are also part of the exhibition.
They include works by Adriaen
Brouwer, Porcellis, Hercules Seghers,
Jan Lievens and Peter Paul Rubens.
Rubens will be represented by a major
work, on loan from Dresden, illustrating
the story of Hero and Leander. It hung
in Rembrandt’s house for many years
before he sold it on in 1644. Another
masterpiece is a painting by
Rembrandt, now in the Prado in
Madrid, portraying his wife, Saskia, as
Artemis. Regarded as one of
Rembrandt’s most beautiful paintings,
it has never been exhibited in the
Netherlands before.
The design of the exhibition will give
the visitor a surprising insight into an
aspect of Rembrandt’s art that has not
previously received the attention it
merits. Works of art and objects from
many collections in the Netherlands
and elsewhere will be on loan to the
Rembrandt House for the occasion. At
the same time, visitors will be able to
admire the Cabinet in Rembrandt’s
house in its original setting, furnished
as far as possible with
seventeenth-century objects to give a
magnificent impression of
Rembrandt’s art collection.
