The exhibition follows a chronological order. It is divided into
five parts and focuses on the artist's masterpieces. Are
successively shown here the first still lifes, for which Chardin
was considered a painter talented in animals and fruit , the
kitchen utensils and housework objects, the genre paintings, the
still lifes of maturity, and finally the pastel portraits. Among the
95 works presented in this exhibition, some are being shown for
the first time to the Parisian public.,Indeed, the three versions of
Pourvoyeuse (Supplier) will be hung on the walls of the
Galeries nationales du Grand Palais, whereas only two were
shown at the 1979 exhibition.
The Chardin exhibition at the Galeries nationales du Grand
Palais, twenty years after the 1979 retrospective, offers the
occasion to rediscover a rare painter to whom Diderot paid tribute in the following comment
at the 1763 Salon : There you are again, you the great magician with your mute
compositions ! . Organised for the tercentennial of Chardin's birth, this
exhibition will be presented in Düsseldorf from 5
December 1999 to 28 February 2000, at the Royal
Academy of Arts in London from 9 March to 28 May
2000, and lastly at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in
New York from 19 June to 17 September 2000.
The Paris exhibition was organised thanks to the
support of LVMH / Moët Hennessy and Louis Vuitton
