"Brice Marden: Workbook Drawings"
1999-10-03 until 2000-01-02
Museum of Fine Art, Houston
Houston, TX,
USA United States of America
Brice Marden is, without question, one of the
greatest draftsmen of his generation. The
peripatetic Marden always travels with
workbooks of varying sizes, as he draws
constantly. The workbooks serve as finished
works in themselves and as first thoughts for
paintings. These workbooks trace Marden’s
route from the early geometrically-configured
imagery of the 1960s and early 1970s through
an architectonic phase of the late 1970s/early
1980s to the sublime calligraphic images of
the last 15 years. They also trace his medium
from charcoal to graphite encaustic to Mont
Blanc pen and ink to sticks. The workbooks
will be supplemented by works in the
museum's collection by artists who
influenced Marden and several additional
loans of early work.
