"Liberated Voices: Contemporary Art
from
South Africa"
1999-09-17 until 2000-01-02
Museum for African Art
New York, NY,
USA United States of America
This examination of contemporary art affords insight into a unique period
of transition in today's South Africa. Having defined themselves for
decades by the oppression of apartheid, South African artists are seeking
ways to reconcile their past and present in order to meet the future. This
soul-searching process considers such questions as, ``where do we go
from here?; ``what does it mean to be black or colored or white in the
new South Africa?; and ``what emotional residue must be reconciled to
enable harmonious living among diverse populations?
Featuring over 65 works including paintings, sculptures, installations,
photographs, and videos made since the end of Apartheid in 1994, this
exhibition highlights major trends in contemporary artistic practice in South
Africa. A focus on the works of young artists who represent diversity in
today's South Africa will, through both art and words, make accessible
their personal experiences and compelling and evocative insight into this
dynamic country.
The exhibition is accompanied by an on-line educational program that
links students in participating cities with artists in South Africa. Workshops
with the visiting artists are among the newsworthy and engaging
programs designed for families. A film series, lectures, and music and
dance performances will provide entertaining and stimulating evening and
weekend programs for students and adults. Additionally, we would like to
offer workshops and artist-in-residence experiences for American students
with several of the South African artists.
