"TRACE
The International Exhibition of the Liverpool Biennial of
Contemporary Art"
1999-09-24 until 1999-11-21
Tate Gallery
Liverpool, ,
UK United Kingdom
The first ever Liverpool Biennial of Contemporary Art will be hosted in many
public locations throughout the city. A central element is Trace, curated by
Anthony Bond from the Gallery of New South Wales, which brings together an
international selection of work based on themes of memory, mapping and material
evidence.
Trace at Tate Gallery Liverpool includes sculptural installations, photographs,
paintings and video works. Photographers Vik Muniz and Miguel Rio Branco
explore Brazilian city life. Vik Muniz' process involves taking a photograph, using
sugar or the detritus of a carnival as additional materials and then re-photographing
to create a beautiful, layered image. Brazilian artist Adriana Varejão is more
concerned with the history and memories of her country's colonial past. In
collaboration with Gallery staff, Miroslaw Balka will make a large sculptural
installation out of soap which draws on his personal history and Polish culture.
Reinhard Mucha from Germany transposes the memory of one space into another
whilst Australian artist Susan Norrie records scenes of tragedy and personal
trauma.
