Tracy Phillips' new paintings are finely detailed
works expressing ambiguity of recurring personal
themes. The work makes references to memories,
fantasies and symbols - all of which are poignant to
the artists individual experiences; however, they also
hold a more universal appeal and understanding.
Significant in her work are architectural elements -
elements, the artist states - of 'where we live'. Ms.
Phillips also uses human characters in various states
of suspension or groundedness who interact with
various elements in natural or unnatural proportions,
effectively describing a sense of being in, and
concurrently, out of place. The larger themes
expressed are ones of duplicity, contrast and
connection.
She describes her work as containing multiple
narratives, whereby her singular images demonstrate
elements referring to, and commenting on, other works
in the series; each painting is a unique, solitary
fragment as part of an ultimately twisted larger
whole.
This grouping of work soundly establishes Ms.
Phillips as an artist who expresses disconnectedness
and uncertainty within the scope of our modern, fast
paced world.
