Full Deck Art Quilts
Washington, DC,
USA United States of America
Art collectors Warren and Nancy Brakensiek of Los Angeles, California, have
recently purchased the innovative and popular quilting exhibition, Full Deck
Art Quilts. The Full Deck collection consists of 54 art quilts, each created
by a different artist working independently to interpret one card each from
a standard deck of 52, plus two jokers.
Since opening at the Smithsonians Renwick Gallery in Washington, DC, this
exhibition has been touring the United States under the auspices of the
Smithsonian Institutions Traveling Exhibitions Services (SITES). The
Brakensieks intend to keep this outstanding art collection together, making
it available for further exhibition, both nationally and internationally,
starting January 1, 2000.
According to Collections Director Karen Brown, the collection combines two
rich cultural traditions, quilting and card playing. This combination has
universal appeal, and many people who dont typically visit museums are
going to see this exhibition. Brown also notes that each time the Full
Deck Quilts are shown; museum attendance, memberships and museum shop sales
show a substantial increase.
Full Deck plays an important part in the art quilt movement by
presenting excellent examples of the wide range of styles and techniques
employed by art quilters today. The collection is documented by an
accompanying book, Art Quilts: Playing with a Full Deck, and a set of
actual Full Deck playing cards.
