"Yoruba Masquerade"
1999-12-10 until 2000-04-09
Art Institute of Chicago
Chicago, IL,
USA United States of America
The masked performances of the Yoruba-speaking people of western
Nigeria and the eastern Republic of Benin are a spectacular blend of
sculpture and costume, music, and dance. The masquerade called
Egungun, for instance, honors the ancestors and acknowledges their
influence in the lives of their kin.
Gelede celebrates the supernatural
powers of women and promotes ideals of behavior through satirical
social critiques. This exhibition presents a sampling of the art of the
Yoruba masquerade, including works for Egungun and Gelede, from
the Art Institute's growing African art collection.
