Travellers these days are searching for that elusive ‘something more’ than
the typical tourist scene.
In the charming Mexican village of Melaque in the stunning beach setting of
Bahia de Navidad, people are finding that extra something that lifts their
travels to a more satisfying level.
At La Paloma Art Center, traveling artists are encouraged to see Mexico at
it’s
fullest with their artist’s eye. In the studio they can integrate their
response to the exciting light, sights and sensations into art forms,
exploring a variety of media under a palapa roof on the beach. Drop in
Classes in
drawing and painting, fiber arts, photography, acrylics, pastels, Spanish
Language and poetry are all taught by qualified artists and teachers with
years of experience.
The overwhelming response to these art experiences, begun in 1998 by 20-year
veteran artist-educator, Nancy Lennie, has led to expansion of the program.
Now guest artists are offering 5 day workshops in their area of expertise.
“Eclectic Acrylics” slated for February 7-11, instructed by Casey Brown, is
the first workshop offered in 2000 by the Center.

Capalino College, BC.)
For the uninitiated, Casey charts the basics with encouragement to
experiment.
For the artist “at home” in the medium, with either watercolor, opaque or
impasto application, Casey encourages expression of ideas and reaching for
the limits with an eye for compostion, form and color
Students can incorporate textures, mixtures of media, three dimensional
effects (found objects, modelling) or expand upon their already established
style. In the heat of the day 10-2, the four-hour workshops
offer a stimulating alternative to part of siesta time.
For people wanting to explore working with pastels, a March 13-17 workshop
features pastel colourist, Marion LeMoal. International award winner,
critically acclaimed in France and New York.
Always working “en plein air”, Marion leads an exploration of the rich
colors and intense hues of pastels, using them to capture the textures and
complexities of natural vistas and simple objects.
The introductory low fee of $100 US/week or $20 US/day makes these new
workshops a very affordable addition to a vacation, even for the
budget-minded traveller.
For travellers looking for a beach holiday and more, the opportunity to
explore their creative side, expand their style and create a personal Mexico
masterpiece awaits them in Melaque.
