"Fragments of Devotion: Early Italian Religious Painting, 1300 - 1480"
2000-02-23 until 2000-05-25
Detroit Institute of Arts
Detroit, MI,
USA United States of America
This exhibition examines the physical shapes, function, and historical context of early
Italian devotional works. Many religious paintings from the 13th to mid-15th centuries
belonged to larger, multi-paneled ensembles intended for church altars, family chapels
and private homes. Many of these altarpieces and small devotional works were
disassembled and dispersed during the last two centuries, reducing their original
aesthetic impact and functional significance.
