"The Triumph of French Painting"
2000-03-12 until 2000-07-16
Baltimore Museum of Art
Baltimore, MD,
USA United States of America
Illustrating the rare genius of some of the most
distinguished artists of all time—from
Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres to Henri
Matisse—this magnificent exhibition surveys a
triumphant age in art history with more than sixty
paintings drawn from the world-renowned collections
of The Baltimore Museum of Art and the Walters Art
Gallery.
The Triumph of French Painting features more
than thirty celebrated artists, including Ingres,
Delacroix, Corot, Millet, Monet, Renoir, Cézanne,
van Gogh, Picasso, and Matisse. A dramatic array of
styles and genres—including landscapes, still lifes,
portraits, and history paintings—are displayed in this
epic story of 19th- and early 20th-century French
painting. From Delacroix's inspiring biblical scenes to
Millet's peasants working in the field at twilight to
Monet's mist-shrouded impressionis of London, the
works in the exhibition form a remarkably
comprehensive overview of the period ranging from
Neoclassicism through Post-Impressionism.
The Triumph of French Painting is organized and
circulated by The Baltimore Museum of Art and the
Walters Art Gallery. Following its Baltimore premiere,
the exhibition travels to The Philbrook Museum of Art,
Tulsa; The Norton Museum of Art, Palm Beach; the Royal
Academy of Art, London; and the Albright-Knox Art
Gallery, Buffalo, New York. The exhibition is jointly
organized by Sona Johnston, BMA Senior Curator of
Painting & Sculpture, and William R. Johnston,
Associate Director and Curator of 18th- and 19th-Century
Art, the Walters Art Gallery. The exhibition features an
illustrated catalogue copublished by the BMA and The
Walters. The Triumph of French Painting is
sponsored by AEGON USA. Additional support provided
by the BMA's Women's Committee.
