Hotel Loretto in Santa Fe. Recursos de Santa Fe wants to share this wealth of expertise with

Friday: Facets of Collecting: Passion, Preservation, and Possession
• Gabrielle Liese, founder of the Bead Museum, how to build a bead
collection.
• Robert Liu, editor of Ornament magazine, historical and ethical problems
with collecting ancient materials
• Anne Durand, Arts Afire Gallery, collecting contemporary bead art
• Robert Gallegos, American Tribal Antique Dealers Association, and Bonnie
Magness-Gardiner, US State Department, national laws and international
regulations that pertain to dealing in cultural properties.
Saturday: Beyond Utilitarian: The Sacred Power of Beads
• Marina Ochoa, curator, Archives of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, the
history of the Rosary
• Jill McKeever Furst, shamanism and adornment in Mexico
• Paul Rainbird, former director, Southwest Association on Indian Affairs
and the IAIA Museum, considerations in collecting and displaying Native
American ritual beadwork
• David Dean, Native American bead artist, sacred iconography in beaded
objects used in the Native American Church.
Sunday: The Bead Factor: Society, Technology, and Human History
• Randall White, director, Institute for Ice Age Studies, the surprising
explosion of female amulet production in Europe 40,000 years ago
• Mildred Constantine, art historian, textile, and costume expert,
innovative use of beads in textile art
• Tony Jojola, lead instructor, Taos Glass Arts and Education Program,
translating the Native spiritual connection with fire into the art of glass
beadmaking
• Peter Francis, Jr., director of the Center for Bead Research, how
technological advances in beadmaking have influenced social and economic
developments for thousands of years.
Two free research sessions are open to the public. What's New in Bead
Research, chaired by Karlis Karklins, Society of Bead Researchers, will be
held Saturday from 2:00-4:30 p.m. at Hotel Loretto. Key bead researchers
have put together the Bead Classification discussion group on Sunday at 2:00
p.m. in Sweeney Center.
