Beginning in the 1950s, Beatrice Riese, the painter, textile designer, and President of the American Abstract Artists Association, assembled an important collection of masks and figural sculptures in wood and metal from West and Central Africa. This exhibition will comprise thirty-five of these pieces including three major pieces of bronze sculptures from Benin, such as Heraldic Plaque with Three Figures from the mid-17th century.
Also shown will be an important Mossi mask from Burkina Faso, an ivory divination tapper from the Yoruba of Nigeria, and six Mtubi bark cloths. All of the objects in the exhibition are recent gifts to the BMA or are part of Mrs. Riese's intended bequest to the Museum.
Organization: This exhibition has been organized by William Siegmann,
